EMSI Revises Life Expectancy Mortality Tables in Response to 2008 VBT

Examination Management Services, Inc. (EMSI), a leading provider of comprehensive underwriting services to the life settlement industry, recently revised its life expectancy underwriting mortality tables with an expected rollout to customers February 2, 2009. EMSI’s updated tables are based on the Society of Actuaries 2008 Valuation Basic Table (VBT). Revisions to EMSI’s mortality tables not only reflect the 2008 VBT’s mortality improvement in the general population, but also include different patterns of mortality between the life insurance and life settlement industries.

In addition, after a comprehensive actuarial review and analysis, EMSI confirmed that it is not necessary to change its underwriting manual or protocols, thus maintaining its life expectancy underwriting objectivity and consistency.

EMSI also engaged actuarial expertise to measure the accuracy of its life expectancy evaluations when applied to the 2008 VBT mortality table. EMSI analyzed over 20,000 lives, reviewed between January 1, 2005 and June 30, 2007, and tracked through June 30, 2008. Mortality patterns were consistent across demographic segments, resulting in an aggregate 95 percent actual-to-expected mortality ratio based upon the 2008 Valuation Basic Table.
